What is a Vertical Helix Piercing?
In a Vertical Helix Piercing, the piercing channel runs vertically through the upper rim of the ear: the barbell enters at the top of the rim and exits at the bottom of the fold. Unlike the classic helix piercing, which is pierced from front to back, both ends are visible in a Vertical Helix Piercing. The flat disc of the labret sits on top, while the top part with its chains hangs freely over the ear at the bottom.
Two Types of Tops
We offer two design types. On many models, the pin is located at the top edge of the design, such as all tops with "Vertical and Hidden Helix" in the name and the curved barbells with dangling chains. This allows the jewelry to stand upright and face forward, even though the bar sits vertically in the ear. These tops also fit the Hidden Helix Piercing, where the jewelry hangs in the fold under the ear rim.
For the other labrets, the pin is centered on the back as usual. Here, the chains fall in a curve from the edge of the ear, creating a slightly looser look.
Material and Dimensions
All models are made of ASTM F136 titanium, nickel-free, and lightweight. The gold-colored variants are coated titanium. The push-in closure (threadless) works without threads: you simply insert the top with its pin into the barbell, and the slight bend of the pin holds it securely in place. For internally threaded labrets, you screw the top into the barbell. With both options, no threads are pulled through the piercing channel during a jewelry change.
The push-in labrets are available in 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.2 mm, and 1.6 mm thicknesses, while the internally threaded labrets come in 1.2 mm. The Vertical Helix Piercing is most commonly pierced at 1.2 mm (16G). Lengths range from 5 mm to 16 mm. As a guide: a healed Vertical Helix Piercing usually requires 8 mm to 10 mm, while a fresh one needs a bit more room for swelling. The individual tops fit any push-in barbell, including the one you are already wearing.

What is the difference between a vertical helix and a hidden helix?
In a Vertical Helix Piercing, the barbell goes vertically through the ear rim, and both ends are visible. The hidden helix piercing is angled slightly backward so that the jewelry disappears into the fold under the rim, leaving only the decorative top visible. Tops with the pin at the upper edge are suitable for both.
What jewelry fits a Vertical Helix Piercing?
Straight labrets with a flat disc rest smoothly on top of the ear rim. For the bottom end, tops that face forward or hang freely, such as those with chains and stones, are ideal.
Can I put a new top on my existing barbell?
Yes, as long as the closure matches. Push-in tops have a pin and only fit push-in barbells, while threaded tops only fit internally threaded barbells. Always check the closure type when buying replacements.

How your helix piercing heals
Clean twice a day with sterile saline solution. Try not to sleep on the pierced side if possible.

Once everything is calm, you can insert new jewelry – in the same gauge as before.
