Ear Piercing Types

Types of ear piercings

The ear is the body part with the most piercing types. In total, more than 12 different ear piercing types are possible here. For many of these types, there is also the double or triple variant, where several piercings are done next to each other. In this way, the ear can be decorated with the most diverse piercing types according to your own taste.

Basically, you can distinguish between ear piercings on the earlobe and piercings through the cartilage. Piercings on the earlobe include the lobe piercing (the normal ear hole) and the high or upper lobe, which sits above the lobe piercing. The remaining ear piercings are pierced through the cartilage tissue on the ear.

Helix Piercing

The helix piercing is one of the most popular piercings of all. Here, the upper, outer edge of the auricle is pierced. With the mid or low helix, the piercings are placed correspondingly lower. A piercing ring and labret piercing are often used as studs for helix piercing jewelry. During the healing time, however, only small barbell piercings are used, as this is the gentlest for the new piercing and the wound heals faster this way.

With the popular helix piercing, you are right on trend and can adapt the piercing to your own style with different variations. An extraordinary look is created, for example, by spiral rings that snake around the helix. The combination of several helix piercings decorated with rings and studs also offers a special look. With a little creativity and the right ear jewelry, which you can find in our shop, your helix piercing can become a statement piece.

Tragus Piercing

Tragus piercing

Close to the face is the tragus piercing, which is pierced through the small cartilage part directly at the entrance to the ear canal. With small ear studs, the tragus comes into its own beautifully. Small ear studs are also the best choice for the anti-tragus piercing, which is located opposite the tragus on the small cartilage projection above the earlobe. But if you prefer rings for your ear piercings, you can also use delicate small piercing rings for the tragus piercing. However, a medical stud should always be chosen as the initial jewelry for the tragus, as the fresh piercing heals much more easily with a stud. After complete healing, you can then switch to rings, decorative studs, or even horseshoe piercings.

Conch Piercing

The conch piercing is located in the auricle. With this ear piercing, you can choose between inner and outer conch. While the inner conch sits in the middle of the auricle, the outer conch is located further up in the ear below the helix piercing.

Both variants offer different advantages and looks: the inner conch, for example, comes into its own with a thick piercing ring, and the outer conch stands out particularly with studs with glittering opal stones or zirconia stones. The inner conch in particular offers many great looks due to the diverse piercing jewelry types that are possible here. Thus, the inner conch can be embellished with both narrow and thick rings and with small or large decorated studs.

Ear Cuffs

Ear cuff piercings are ear clips that are attached to the outer edge of the ear. They are placed at the desired location on the ear and then pressed together until the ear cuffs are securely on the ear. No piercing hole is required for this type of ear piercing, which is why they are often used as a helix piercing or conch alternative. Because with ear cuffs, both the pain of piercing and the long healing process are eliminated. Buying ear cuffs is also a good idea for those who are undecided, as you can try out whether you like the ear jewelry or not with these ear clips before getting pierced.

From delicate small cuffs to eye-catching ear clips with hanging chains and pendants, there is something for every taste. Your own style can also be varied by wearing extravagant ear cuffs one day and simple ear clips the next.

Daith Piercing

The daith piercing is pierced through the cartilage fold above the entrance to the ear canal and lies in the middle of the ear. The fashionable ear piercing not only looks beautiful but is also said to help against migraines. Because an acupuncture point runs through this spot, which has a relaxing effect when stimulated and is thus also supposed to relieve migraines. This is not scientifically proven, but according to experience reports, it seems to work for many (but not all) people with migraines. If the daith piercing doesn't make your migraines disappear, you at least have a cool piercing.

Industrial and Orbital Piercing

Industrial piercing

The industrial piercing and the orbital piercing are both ear piercings that are pierced through two spots on the ear and are then connected either with a long barbell (industrial barbell piercing) or a piercing ring (orbital). The industrial is located at the top of the ear and is pierced through the outer and inner edge of the ear. With the orbital piercing, you have a large selection, as this piercing can be done anywhere on the ear. So you can get an orbital piercing on the earlobe as well as on any cartilage spot.

Rook Piercing

The rook piercing is pierced vertically through the upper, middle cartilage fold, also known as the antihelix. Curved barbells (i.e., banana piercings) are the suitable jewelry for the rook, as the slightly curved bars adapt particularly well to this spot. Bananas between 8 mm and 10 mm are often chosen. Piercing rings are just as suitable for the rook piercing due to their curved shape, although these should only be used as secondary and replacement jewelry.

Ear Piercing Materials

Best materials for ear piercings

Choosing the right material is extremely important for piercings, because unlike normal jewelry, piercings are in the body and are therefore more sensitive. Especially for the initial insertion, the right material is a crucial factor for the problem-free healing of a piercing. But even after the initial healing phase, the piercing material remains important, as complications after healing can be avoided with the right material. You can find more information about this and the advantages of the individual materials in our piercing materials guide.

Surgical Steel

Surgical steel is a popular material for piercings and offers various advantages. A surgical steel piercing has a particularly smooth surface, which ensures less friction. Surgical steel cannot rust or discolor and therefore has a long lifespan. In addition, surgical steel is very inexpensive and at the same time high quality. People with a large number of ear piercings therefore often choose this material to keep the costs for their piercings low.

Titanium

Titanium is one of the most popular materials for ear piercings. This material is particularly interesting for people with a nickel allergy, because a titanium ear piercing is 100% nickel-free and thus a completely safe choice. Because of this property, titanium is also often used by piercers as initial jewelry for smooth healing. Since titanium has many other positive properties to offer in addition to its nickel-free composition, piercings made of this material are slightly more expensive. However, the higher price is accepted by many, as you get high quality for your money here.

Real Gold

Piercings made of real gold are particularly high quality and highly tolerated. A gold ear piercing consists of 14 or 18 carat gold, as higher carats are too soft for piercings and prone to scratches. Real gold piercings with the right carat are durable and have a long lifespan. Ears decorated with gold piercings look particularly elegant due to the highly polished precious metal. The valuable material is therefore a good investment that will give you pleasure for a long time.

PTFE / Plastic

Piercings made of PTFE or plastic (Bioflex) are well suited for the ears, because the material is comfortable to wear, is extremely flexible, and has a smooth surface that is hypoallergenic. Bioflex piercings used for ears are mainly PTFE bars with attachments made of other materials such as gold or titanium. This has the advantage that the piercing hole is protected by the plastic bar without losing the look of a metal piercing.

Ear Piercing Jewelry

Ear piercing jewelry

After your ear piercing has healed, you can finally change the initial piercing and decorate your piercing with body jewelry in many different shapes and colors such as gold, rose gold, or silver. In addition to classic ear piercings and earrings, barbell piercings, horseshoe piercings, or labrets can also decorate your ears.

Barbell piercings consist of straight bars with two balls at the ends. This type of piercing jewelry is preferred for the industrial piercing. The bar length of the barbell should be about 30 mm to 50 mm for the industrial. Smaller barbells with about 6 mm to 8 mm can be used for the helix piercing or the tragus piercing, for example. A special form of the barbell are curved barbells or banana piercings. Due to their slightly curved shape, they are well suited for a snug piercing and rook piercing.

Horseshoe piercings (open ring with two balls) and closed rings such as CBR rings or segment piercing rings or clicker piercings are particularly popular for ear piercings like the helix. However, these ring types can also be used for most other ear piercing types, as far as anatomically possible. The variety of ring sizes and designs makes a piercing ring a popular choice for ear piercings.

Almost all ear piercings can be embellished with labrets. Since labrets are available in countless beautiful designs and motifs, the selection and the possibility to individualize the ear jewelry is large here.

The flesh plug and the spiral are used to stretch earlobes and have an extraordinary look. They are very eye-catching and therefore suitable for people who like to attract attention with their body jewelry.

You can buy all these different ear jewelry types comfortably in our shop in particularly high-quality materials such as surgical steel, gold (14 carat), or titanium at fair prices.

Curated Ear

Curated ear trend

The "curated ear" is and remains one of the hottest ear piercing trends. With the curated ear, several ear piercings are combined with each other to create beautiful and coordinated looks. The advantage here is that you can design your ear piercings individually according to your own taste. For example, you can put together an aesthetic curated ear with several lobe piercings, the daith piercing, and the helix piercing. With the combination of different ear jewelry such as filigree studs or rings with extraordinary designs, the curated ear can be further personalized. So no ear looks like the other.

Flat Piercing

The flat piercing is located at the top middle on the flat side of the ear. This ear piercing type is relatively new, but is nevertheless enjoying great popularity. With the flat piercing, you can choose between several piercings with small studs or one large ear stud. Both variants offer different looks and look particularly good in combination with other ear piercings such as helix or tragus. The advantage of the flat piercing lies in the relatively short healing time. In contrast to other cartilage piercings, this is only about 6-8 weeks.

Forward Helix Piercing

An interesting variant of the helix piercing that is popular this year is the forward helix piercing (also called anti-helix). The special thing about this piercing is that it is pierced at the top of the inner edge of the ear instead of the outer edge like the normal helix. The most popular piercing jewelry for the forward helix are small, delicate studs that come into their own perfectly on this narrow fold on the ear. The triple forward helix, where three piercings are placed at this spot, looks particularly appealing.

Daith Piercing

The daith piercing is one of the most beautiful ear piercings. In connection with a decorated segment clicker, this piercing unfolds its full potential and looks strikingly beautiful. But even those who prefer a more subtle look can wear this piercing, because even simple earrings stand out discreetly at this spot.

Inner Conch Piercing

Without a doubt, the inner conch piercing is one of the most highly coveted ear piercings among influencers and celebrities. Combined with a ring with a high bar thickness and sparkling stones, this piercing immediately catches the eye. With the right pieces of jewelry, which you can find in our shop at unbeatable prices, you will draw all eyes to your ear.

Getting an Ear Piercing

How to get an ear piercing

Getting an ear piercing should always be done in a piercing studio by a qualified piercer. Even if piercing at a jeweler used to be common, this is no longer the best choice for an ear piercing today, as jewelers, unlike piercers, are not specially trained for piercing. Piercers are much more expert in this area and thus able to avoid serious mistakes that can occur due to a lack of knowledge.

When getting an ear piercing, different techniques are used depending on the type of piercing. Basically, a special piercing needle, a so-called hollow needle, is always used. Depending on the piercing, the piercer uses forceps to grip the spot well and pierce exactly at the marked spot. Another piercing technique is the use of a receiving tube. This is a kind of protective tube that is held behind the ear or behind the spot to be pierced during piercing. It safely catches the needle after piercing and prevents accidental piercing of the neighboring tissue in narrower places such as the daith or the tragus piercing. The protective tube creates counter-pressure during piercing, which simplifies the piercing process.

The basic procedure for getting an ear piercing does not differ much from that of any other piercing type. The desired spot is well disinfected and marked by the piercer. The tissue is held or supported either with the fingers, forceps, or a receiving tube, as described above. The piercer then pierces the piercing spot with a sterile needle in a quick and smooth movement. The piercing jewelry is then usually pulled through the piercing using a plastic cannula and securely closed. With the subsequent cleaning of the fresh wound, the piercing is done.

The prices for getting the different ear piercings vary greatly and depend on the type of piercing. Depending on the ear piercing and studio, you pay about 20 € to 80 €.

Ear Piercing Methods

In addition to piercing with a needle, there are other methods by which you can get your ear pierced. For a long time, ear piercings were shot with an ear piercing gun. However, it is now known that piercing with an ear piercing gun can cause considerable damage. Cartilage tissue must under no circumstances be shot, as the tissue is shattered in the process and complications such as severe inflammation or wild growth can occur. The earlobe is less sensitive due to the soft tissue, but piercing with a needle is to be preferred here too. Because piercing with a sterile needle, which is disposed of after each customer, is much more hygienic than shooting with an ear piercing gun. Piercing is also far less painful than shooting.

Another method is punching, which is particularly suitable for piercings on the cartilage. Here, the cartilage tissue is punched out at the desired position with a hollow needle. The advantage of punching is the shorter healing time. While pierced cartilage piercings normally take 6 - 9 months to heal, a punched ear piercing only takes about 2-3 months. However, the disadvantage of punching is that no new cartilage tissue grows back after the jewelry is removed. Instead, a thin layer of skin can form over the ear hole.

Pain and Healing

Due to the large number of possible ear piercings, the pain and healing time also vary depending on the type of piercing. Piercings on the earlobe (lobe or high lobe) are usually not very painful, because they are pierced through soft tissue. Accordingly, the ear holes heal quickly and easily in about 4-8 weeks.

Things look a little different with the remaining ear piercings, which are pierced through the cartilage. Since the cartilage has no vessels of its own for blood supply, healing takes significantly longer and can take up to 9 months. The pain with cartilage piercings is also considerably higher, as the cartilage tissue is very firm and this leads to high pressure pain during piercing. The pain depends on how thick the cartilage is at the spot. Depending on the ear piercing type, they can therefore vary greatly. The helix piercing and the industrial piercing, for example, are considered to be some of the most painful cartilage piercings, while the tragus piercing is perceived by many as less painful.

Care

Care for your ear piercing

Especially with cartilage piercings, which have a longer healing time, the risk of inflammation is high. Conscientious care as prescribed by the piercer as well as the following general tips can help to reduce this risk.

Try as far as possible not to sleep on the pierced ear and not to touch the piercing apart from caring for it. While showering, you should make sure that no shampoo gets on your freshly pierced ear. Other products such as hairspray should also ideally have no contact with your ears. Hair should be worn away from the face at least in the first few weeks, otherwise it can get caught on the ear piercing. When using headphones and making phone calls, you should switch to the unpierced ear. You should under no circumstances take out the initial piercing before it has completely healed, otherwise the piercing will close up again immediately.

Avoiding Risks

The possibility of risks occurring is present with ear piercings, just as with other piercing types. You will find out what these risks are and how you can keep them under control as much as possible in this section.

With cartilage piercings, slight feelings of pressure are normal even a few days after piercing, as the firm cartilage tissue was only displaced by the piercing and not removed as with punching. Slight swelling of the pierced spot and a slight itching directly after piercing are also normal. However, you should pay attention to more severe reactions or feelings of pain, because it could also be an inflammation or infection.

Infections can occur if there is insufficient hygiene during piercing or care and manifest themselves through severe redness, green or brown pus, and a warming of the pierced spot. If these signs appear, a doctor should be consulted immediately to prevent further complications. However, all this can usually be avoided with thorough research, the careful selection of an experienced piercer, and the right care.

Allergies can also pose a not inconsiderable risk with an ear piercing and entail consequences such as redness, itching, and skin rashes. If allergies such as a latex or nickel allergy are already known in advance, you should definitely inform the piercer about them. They will then make appropriate changes during piercing so that the allergy does not affect the piercing process and further healing.

The formation of wild meat, a tissue overgrowth, is particularly common with cartilage piercings. Wild meat is usually caused by increased pressure and friction. Consequently, the risk of this overgrown tissue forming can also be reduced by avoiding this friction. In addition, incorrect care or incorrect piercing (e.g., due to an incorrect technique or angle) can promote wild meat. Here too, the rule applies: this risk is reduced as much as possible by a qualified piercer.
